Winners and Losers: Gazzaniga has nightmare day as Sunderland return in style

As a new season dawns across the continent’s top five leagues, Betopick score is back to bring you who has had a great and not-so-great weekend with our regular feature, Winners and Losers.

Winner: Santi Cazorla (Real Oviedo)The love story between Real Oviedo and Santi Cazorla has had many chapters, but they wrote a new one during Friday's 1-0 defeat to Villarreal at La Ceramica.

Cazorla started his career with the Asturian side as a youngster before moving, ironically, to Villarreal in 2003.

Now, at the age of 40, he has gone full circle, playing in LaLiga for the first time with Oviedo, having helped them achieve promotion to the top flight for the first time in over two decades last season.

Add in the fact that he used his own money to help save them from bankruptcy in 2012 and it really is a fairytale that we don’t see much in football any more, one that will warm even the coldest of hearts.

Loser: Paulo Gazzaniga (Girona)Staying in LaLiga, it was a nightmare day for Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

The former Southampton and Tottenham stopper recorded one of Betopick’s lowest ever ratings in his side’s 3-1 defeat to Rayo Vallecano with an eye-watering 1.

2.

In the 18th minute, a hideous pass out from the back gifted Vallecano their opening goal, and it only got worse from there for the Argentine.

Two minutes later, he allowed a cross to go across the face of the goal for the visitors to double their lead, and to top it all off, a bad touch saw him bring down Jorge de Frutos for a clear penalty and a red card.

Safe to say, Gazzaniga will not be looking back at this game fondly - read more on his outing here.

He wasn’t the only keeper to have a bad day at the office; check this error out from Czech side Teplice's goalkeeper Matous Trmal.

Winner: Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth)On a night tinged with emotion at Anfield in tribute of Diogo Jota, there was a moment of communal disgust after Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo was racially abused by a Liverpool spectator during the first half.

The ‘fan’ was removed from the game, and Semenyo produced a second-half display to remember, scoring twice to bring his side back into the game against the Premier League champions - a game that would ultimately end in a 4-2 defeat.

The second was a sensational run he made from the edge of his own box straight down the other end before applying a composed finish.

After the game, members of both sides condemned the abuse given to the Ghanaian, saying that they would all support him in any way they could.

And Semenyo showed his appreciation on Saturday, saying: "Football showed its best side when it mattered most.

"
Losers: HemelingenThe first round of the DFB Pokal has become the traditional curtain-raiser to the German domestic season as the Bundesliga sides face tricky away trips to lower division teams.

This can be a recipe for some eyebrow-raising upsets, but that wasn’t the case when Wolfsburg travelled to Oberliga Bremen outfit Hemmelingen.

Paul Simonis' men were imperious in their efficiency in their first competitive match under the Dutch manager, netting nine in the win.

Dzenan Pejcinovic was the pick of the bunch, netting a hat-trick, whilst there was also a brace for Mattias Svanberg.

Hemelingen didn't only concede nine goals from the 38 shots they faced, but also an xG of 7.

26 - very rarely do our match centres record such a high tally in that metric.

The fifth-tier side will be glad they don't have to face that calibre of opposition again this season.

Winners: SunderlandAfter nearly 10 years in the wilderness, one Netflix series and plenty of heartache, Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style with a famous 3-0 victory over West Ham on Saturday.

All the goals came in the second half for the Black Cats, with Eliezer Mayenda, Wilson Isidor and Daniel Ballard all getting on the scoresheet to raise the roof off the Stadium of Light.

The result was made all the more impressive given that eight players made their debut for the hosts.

Who says you need time to bed in?Losers: MallorcaWe finish as we started in Winners and Losers this week - in Spain.

Barcelona headed to the Balearic Islands to face Mallorca, and the game was pretty much over at half-time after a dramatic implosion from the home side that led to a 3-0 loss.

Two red cards in the opening 45 minutes showed that they were certainly fired up for the contest.

Incredibly, they held out against Barcelona for much of the second half despite being two players down; however, they will have to simmer down next time out so they can have a better opportunity of winning.

Their fans may want to as well after being infuriated by what was a fairly stonewall red card - they'll wear themselves out long before the end of the season if they carry that energy with them going forward.
