Qarabag take big step towards Champions League main phase after away win at Ferencvaros

Qarabag came from behind to defeat Ferencvaros 3-1 at the Groupama Aréna, extending the Horsemen's winning streak in UEFA Champions League qualifying to five matches.

Ferencvaros came into this game on the back of their first home loss since February, and Robbie Keane’s men needed to survive an early scare in this game too, with Kady Malowski testing the resolve of Dénes Dibusz with an ambitious strike from distance that the goalkeeper clawed away from the bottom corner.

The reigning Hungarian champions grew into the game though, forcing visiting goalkeeper Mateusz Kochalski into action after 14 minutes when he denied Alex Tóth the opener.

The Greens continued to apply pressure on their visitors, and eventually broke the deadlock courtesy of Barnabás Varga after the veteran forward fired into the bottom-right corner with a clinical finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Ferencvaros continued to turn up the heat as half time contacted and very nearly added a second when Lenny Joseph unleashed an effort towards the top corner, but yet again Kochalski came to Qarabag’s rescue.

The Horsemen finalised the turnaround on 67 minutes, taking the lead through Kevin Medina as he brought the ball down and stabbed it into the roof of the net from close range.

The home side looked for a way back into the game in the latter stages with Aleksandar Pešić seeing a header saved by the goalkeeper.

However, it was Qarabag who managed to find the game’s fourth goal, with Musa Gurbanly dispatching a pinpoint effort from the edge of the area.

The result sees Qarabag head into the second leg in Azerbaijan with a two-goal advantage as they look to reach the UCL proper for the first time since 2017/18.
