Heracles midfielder Jeff Reine-Adelaide suffers knee injury, to undergo surgery

Heracles Almelo midfielder Jeff Reine-Adelaide will undergo knee surgery after sustaining a significant injury in last Friday's practice session, the club revealed.

The former Arsenal talent arrived at Heracles Almelo on a free transfer from Italian outfit Salernitana.

Reine-Adelaide brought a lot of promise with him and joined the Eredivisie side to get his career back on track after suffering consecutive cruciate ligaments tears at Lyon and Nice in 2019 and 2020.

However, the 27-year-old Frenchman suffered a seemingly significant knee injury in practice on Friday.

After inital tests, Heracles revealed on Monday that Reine-Adelaide will travel to France to undergo knee surgery from the same surgeon that helped him with his earlier knee injuries.

The surgery will help establish a timetable for Reine-Adelaide's return, which Heracles do not expect to happen anytime soon.

'Never seen a midfielder like him'Heracles manager Bas Sibum feels for Reine-Adelaide, who moved from Angers to Lyon for €25 million in 2019.

"It's a terrible situation, especially for Jeff himself," Sibum said on the club website.

"He's had a similar injury before and now has to go through this difficult procedure again.

It's also a blow for the team.

You could see Jeff getting better every day, and to be honest, I haven't seen a midfielder in the Eredivisie who can play football as well as he can.

Really, I haven't.

It's a real shame for us, our fans and neutral football fans that we won't be able to see him in action for the time being.

"
Heracles, who work with one of the smallest budgets in the Eredivisie, will likely have to re-enter the transfer market following Reine-Adelaide's injury.

Midfielder Jordy Bruijn was sold to Bali United earlier this summer, and Mario Engels and Sava Cestic also suffered injuries recently.

Jeff Reine-Adelaide's recent statisticsBetopick“Together with the staff and the scouting team, we are always assessing the strength of our squad," said general manager Nico-Jan Hoogma.

"
We are in the middle of a procedure, but unforeseen circumstances sometimes force you to act differently than initially planned.

Mario Engels, who was forced to leave the pitch within fifteen minutes of the match against FC Utrecht, is one such circumstance.

"In addition, we also have to wait until more is known about the severity of Jeff's injury and the duration of his rehabilitation.

We have until 2 September to act on the transfer market.

We will make good use of that time to assess which qualities the squad needs most at this moment.

”Heracles Almelo started the Eredivisie season with consecutive losses, first losing 4-0 to FC Utrecht before getting beaten 4-1 by NEC last weekend.

The Almelo outfit visit Ajax in Amsterdam next, on Sunday, August 24th.
