Feyenoord recover from European hangover with comeback win at Excelsior

Feyenoord recovered from their Champions League hangover from last Tuesday with their second consecutive win in the Eredivisie as Excelsior were toppled 2-1.

Four days after their 5-2 Champions League loss away at Fenerbahce, Feyenoord started their away game at neighbours Excelsior with an unchanged side, meaning Jordan Lotomba kept his spot at right-back after a dismal performance in Istanbul.

Excelsior, meanwhile, saw three new names start after their 5-0 defeat away at NEC.

Stijn van Gassel sustained a groin injury against NEC, meaning Calvin Raatsie got his first minutes of the season.

Zach Booth got the nod over Noah Naujoks in midfield, while Nolan Martens started ahead of Ilias Bronkhorst in defence.

Feyenoord started terribly and conceded after just nine minutes.

Quinten Timber was easily pushed off the ball on his own half, after which Adam Carlen found Derensili Sanches Fernandes, who profited from a mistake from Feyenoord stopper Timon Wellenreuther and gave Excelsior a unexpected early lead.

Feyenoord woke up from a dire first 15 minutes and got alongside Excelsior after 22 minutes.

Quinten Timber tested Raatsie, who stopped the first effort but could not keep Ayase Ueda from scoring from the rebound.

The Rotterdam giants took complete control of the match and took their first lead of the day after 34 minutes, when captain Sem Steijn scored his second of the season with a crafty half volley.

Excelsior barely put up a challenge as they fell back and only managed to come nearing a goal once, but a deflection from Feyenoord's Tsuyoshi Watanabe just bounced past Wellenreuther's far post.

Feyenoord held on, but did not convince as they grabbed a mere 2-1 win at Woudestein.

The Europa League outfit continue their season in two weeks, when they'll complete their Rotterdam bingo with an away game at Sparta.

Excelsior, who are pointless after two weeks, face a tricky away game at red-hot FC Utrecht next week.
