CHAN 2024: Chelle admits Nigeria fell short of expectations, targets Congo redemption

Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has taken full responsibility for the Super Eagles’ disappointing campaign at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), admitting that the outcome fell short of expectations.

Following the Super Eagles’ return to the biennial African football showpiece, expectations were high that the 2018 runners-up would deliver a strong performance in the tournament hosted across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

However, the West Africans’ journey ended abruptly after just two games, as they first fell 1-0 to defending champions Senegal before being thrashed 4-0 by the Sudanese national team.

With Nigeria’s aspiration of clinching a maiden CHAN title now over, the Franco-Malian tactician openly took responsibility for the team’s disappointing campaign, while assuring fans that his side would bounce back with a stronger performance against Congo in a bid to restore some pride.

"Of course, I take responsibility as coach.

But now it’s about lifting morale.

We must return home with something positive,"
Chelle told the media.

"Football is about learning lessons.

We must show our positive side now (against Congo).

"
Nigeria’s preparations were thrown into disarray after losing several key players to overseas transfers just before the tournament, a setback that left the squad scrambling for balance.

Chelle did not hide his frustration, lamenting the disruption and admitting that it hampered the team’s rhythm and overall performance.

"Eight of our players from the qualifiers left.

That’s 80% of the squad gone.

We had to rebuild on the fly.

"
Nigeria and Congo head to the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium with contrasting ambitions.

The already-eliminated Super Eagles will be aiming to restore some pride before heading home, while the Leopards, after back-to-back draws in their opening games, desperately need a win to secure qualification for the next round.

Nigeria captain Junior Nduka vowed that the Super Eagles would not bow out meekly despite their elimination.

He assured fans that the team remains determined to fight for victory in their final game, stating their commitment to restoring pride and giving a performance worthy of the jersey.

“We need a win for the country.

We’ll give everything against Congo,” he said.

“The two defeats affected us, but we must bounce back.
