Asante Kotoko lengthened their recent dominance over archrivals Hearts of Oak by securing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory in the 2025 President’s Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The win not only handed over Kotoko their record-extending ninth President’s Cup title but also stretched their unbeaten run against Hearts to five matches, with the Porcupine Warriors picking up four wins and one sketch in that period.
Hearts of Oak struck first in the 23rd minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse as Hamza Issah slotted home after a miscue from Kotoko’s goalkeeper.
Despite going behind, Kotoko showed resilience and composure, mounting a spirited second-half fightback.
The equaliser reached in the 51st minute via an own goal from Hearts defender Konadu Yiadom, who inadvertently turned a dangerous cross into his own net.
Just a minute later, Kwame Opoku completed the turnaround with a composed complete, sending Kotoko fans into a frenzy.
Opoku and his teammates paid homage to Diogo Jota by mimicking his video game celebration.
Hearts pressed for a late equaliser, seeing a goal disallowed for offside and missing a crucial penalty, but Kotoko’s defence gripped firm to seal the victory.
The victory is seen as a major psychological expand as the Porcupine Warriors prepare for their return to continental football in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Kotoko coach Abdul Karim Zito was full of praise for his team’s fighting spirit and emphasized the importance of the win for both the club and its supporters.
“Nothing is sweeter than beating Hearts to hand over joy to Kotoko fans, especially in a final.
This victory completes our season and gives us the right momentum for the Confederation Cup.
We used the pain of previous defeats as motivation, and today the boys handed over when it mattered most.
”Hearts coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, on the other hand, acknowledged Kotoko’s quality and emphasised the need for continued improvement:“We tried to use an economic method of training to prepare the players for this big occasion.
It’s a tough loss, but we have to learn and work harder.
The rivalry brings out the best in both teams, and we must regroup for the challenges ahead.
”With the President’s Cup secured, Asante Kotoko will now shift their concentrate to the CAF Confederation Cup, with the preliminary stage set to kick off next month.
